Summary of the Advantages objected through Results

By following the management procedures and by applying the Environmental Management Plan, in conjunction with the Land Management Plan, Binna Burra has been successful in reducing its usage of energy and water resources, and has reduced the production of liquid and solid wastes.

The EMP has also helped to improve the recycling program and guest education.

Specifically:

  • Since the introduction of fluorescent lighting there has been a 20% reduction in electricity usage
  • Changing the water heating system from diesel to gas-generated has resulted in an 88% reduction in diesel consumption
  • The installation of low flow taps in all guest accommodation has reduced the daily water consumption
  • The introduction of worm beds for composting of food and garden waste to be used as a fertiliser has greatly reduced the quantity of solid wastes needing to be removed from the mountain
  • Binna Burra has its own sewage treatment plant
  • Binna Burra has installed a UV Filtration system to our water supply as an alternative to the use of chlorine

The environmental benefits achieve through the implementation of the EMP have resulted in a quantifiable reduction in Lodge operating costs and it is projected that these initiatives will generate even more savings in the future.
