Environmental Ideas for your Home

Many of the procedures and environmental practices embraced by Binna Burra Mountain Lodge can be implemented by other businesses and individuals to reduce their daily impacts on the environment.

Although some of the Lodge's conservation techniques relate specifically to a large establishment (such as having its own waste water treatment plant!), Binna Burra actively encourages its guests to incorporate ecologically sustainable initiatives into their every day life:

  • Recycle all possible products, including glass, aluminium, paper, cardboard, and plastic
  • Turn off lights when they are not in use and change normal light bulbs for energy saving fluorescent lighting
  • Conserve water by turning off taps when not being used - such as when brushing teeth or shaving
  • Fix any leaks, have quicker showers and hang towels up to dry instead of washing them after every use
  • Use environmentally friendly products that are recognised as biodegradable - such as dishwashing detergents, household cleaners, insect repellents, etc.
  • Reduce wasted packaging at home by buying in bulk and reusing containers
  • Use boxes instead of plastic bags to carry groceries
  • Reduce food waste by establishing a worm bed or composting system in the garden. This not only reduces the pressure on our rubbish tips but also provides an excellent source of fertilizer for the gardens
  • Plant Australian natives that are suited to your garden landscape, rather than introduced species. This will reduce the need for watering and attract birds, butterflies, and other forms of wildlife into your garden

These ideas are not only beneficial to our environment, but they are also practical money saving devices.
